EWH - One Year Later: Reflections and New Horizons

A blog by Juliane Affonso, Lieutenant (Naval Engineering), Cartography Department, Hydrographic Center of the Brazilian Navy & 2023 EWH Secondee

It’s hard to believe that it’s been a year since my secondment with IC-ENC for the Empowering Women in Hydrography project. Looking back, I can confidently say that this experience has been transformative, both personally and professionally.

New Opportunities and Experiences

My time at IC-ENC immersed me in a variety of projects that challenged me to think critically and creatively. In 2023, I participated at MACHC, where I presented the project developed as part of the IC-ENC EWH Project. During the event, I shared my experiences, highlighting both my professional and personal growth, and discussed future challenges. The feedback I received from the members present was incredibly positive, further motivating all members to develop projects in this field. Another significant opportunity that arose from my secondment was my involvement in the S-101PT13 project. Joining this initiative not only expanded my professional network but also enhanced my understanding of project management and collaborative teamwork. The experience of tackling issues related to S-101 challenges alongside experts in the field ignited my passion for innovation and collaboration.

Boosting Confidence

The secondment was not just about skill development; it was a major confidence booster. Engaging with diverse teams and presenting my ideas in demanding situations taught me to trust my judgment and communicate more effectively. The constructive feedback I received was invaluable, reinforcing my belief in my ability to make meaningful contributions to impactful projects. This increased confidence has motivated me to embrace greater responsibilities in my current role, allowing me to spearhead initiatives I previously might have shied away from.

New Skills

The skills I gained during my secondment have been instrumental in my career progression. From improved communication techniques to refined analytical skills, I’ve been able to implement what I learned to enhance processes and strengthen team collaboration in my current position. The experience has also equipped me with a fresh perspective on strategic thinking, which has been particularly beneficial as I face constant challenges in my work.

Reflecting on the past year, I can honestly say that my EWH secondment with IC-ENC was a pivotal chapter in my career. It opened doors to new opportunities, built my confidence, and enriched my skill set in ways that continue to impact my work today. I am excited to see where these developments will lead me in the future and encourage anyone considering a similar path to embrace the journey — it truly can change your professional trajectory and inspire you to reach new heights.
