Spain host Argentina: Compilation & validation of S-101 cartographic data
From 18th to 29th November 2024, a secondment was carried out at the Instituto Hidrográfico de la Marina (IHM) of Spain for compilation and validation of S-101 cartographic data, consisting of the transformation of electronic navigation charts (ENCs) from S-57 standard to the new S-101 standard, and ENC S-101 production. This internship was attended by Lieutenant Commander Rocío del Valle Borjas, from the Servicio de Hidrografía Naval (SHN) of the Argentine Republic.
Rocío reflects on her experiences below:
To work on these topics, I received support from Sonsoles Muñoz Vergara (IHM Cartography Team) in particular, whilst also working alongside other members of IHM throughout the course of the secondment.
I worked with the CARIS HPD 4.1.40 software together with the specific S-100 module, using the following documents:
S-101 ENC_Product_Specification_Edition 1.1.0
"Transformation file from S-57 to S-101" (S-57_3_1_to_S-101_1_1_0.xml).
"S-101 Data Classification and Coding Guide"
S-57 ENC to S-101 Conversion Guidance
During the two weeks, the following tasks were carried out:
Upload to the Argentine and Spanish cell databases for all browsing purposes.
Verification of the source data and application of the validation (checks) designed by IC-ENC for the preparation of the same for the mapping to S-101.
Creation of projects for new products.
Opening of the source data with the new project using the Product Editor module, applying the conversion to S-101 (with the transformation file).
Review of the error report and objects/attributes to be modified.
Product creation. Once this product was created, objects and attributes were modified or corrected according to the report.
Validations perform.
Products generation was completed with the use of SCAMIN for objects, grouping of soundings. Product export and automatic creation of the exchange set were completed.
Finally, there were performed updates (deletion, modification and addition of objects), exporting and adding them to the exchange set.
These two weeks of work have been fruitful and beneficial, increasing cooperation and sharing of knowledge between the professionals of both Hydrographic Services.
